Notified Bodies
Unlike the Cenelec Standards, which
nominated approved Testing Authorities, Atex permits Member States to nominate
their own approval bodies under
Mutual Recognition Agreements. Member States rely on their official
Competent Authority (in Ireland, the Health & Safety Authority) to assess bodies
who meet the criteria set down in the Directive. Member States may notify the
Council and other Member States of the bodies it wishes to be regarded as
Notified Bodies. An identification number is allocated to each Notified Body and
is used in CE marking. It is the responsibility of the Member State to ensure
that their Notified Bodies meet and continue to meet the criteria set down in
the Directive. Notified Bodies may be designated as notified for different
requirements of the Directive (e.g. one body may be notified as competent for
Product/Production Quality only and another body for Quality, Testing,
